When we talk about culture in Denmark, our minds often turn to H.C. Andersen, "Matador," hot dog stands, the Danish flag, and other historically rooted symbols that today's Danish youth may not have a direct connection to. In Hip Hop, there is a broad understanding that it is the young people who create the waves and define the culture. Rapolitics believes this should also be the case in the broader understanding of culture and identity formation.
Therefore, we have created the rap workshop format "Claim Your Cultural Heritage," which challenges Danish cultural heritage and identity. The workshop presents a new and different way of looking at culture by viewing Danish culture not as a fixed entity but as a self-defining one for young people in Denmark. Participants are encouraged to reflect, debate, and express themselves about their own cultural backgrounds. Their reflections on what Danish cultural heritage means are heard, and they become aware of their own understanding of culture as a concept. Rapolitics' rap coaches challenge participants to express themselves about cultural heritage through Rap and help them transform discussions and opinions into rhymes and rhythm, which are eventually performed in front of the other participants. The workshop is structured so that participants experience a transformation from being culture consumers to culture bearers – and ultimately, culture creators.
● Participants understand what cultural heritage is and can reflect on their own cultural backgrounds and the opportunities and barriers they may provide
● Participants can engage in dialogue about being culture creators
● Participants are motivated to use their voices to debate what culture is and understand that rap can be a way to do so
