HIP HOP HUB

[.lightbox] ABOUT HIP HOP HUB [.lightbox]

[.lightbox]In 2016, Rapolitics, supported by Nordea-fonden, established the first nationwide network for Hip Hop practitioners in Denmark. Between 2016 and 2018, we engaged thousands of young people in Hip Hop culture through workshops, seminars and reinterpretations of Danish cultural heritage. We also launched Denmark’s first Hip Hop collection curated by young people. In 2020, with continued support from Nordea-fonden, we began a new chapter in Hip Hop Hub’s history, with a strong focus on educating the next generation of young cultural entrepreneurs. Our goal is to give a nationwide boost to youth culture through more local cultural activities and events created by young people for young people.[.lightbox]

[.lightbox] THE LIGHTHOUSE MODEL [.lightbox]

[.lightbox]In 2020, we established three ‘lighthouses’ in Jutland, Zealand, and the Capital Region. These beacons serve as regional go-to places for young people, anchoring the Hip Hop Hub network locally and strengthening youth culture across the country. Each lighthouse consists of two organizations working together to create a safe space for young people to explore and develop local culture. These lighthouses are led by skilled coaches, experienced project managers, and dedicated youth teams who receive training in cultural creation. Our Hip Hop Hub beacons are key gathering points where young people can create local culture for and with other young people in creative communities.[.lightbox]

HIP HOP HUB'S YOUTH TEAM ARE TOMORROW'S NEW CULTURE CREATORS

In close collaboration with our three beacons in Zealand, Jutland, and the Capital Region, we assembled a strong team of 15 young individuals in 2020, all passionate about making a difference in their local cultural scene.

The youth team has considerable creative freedom to develop the cultural initiatives and projects they are passionate about, with guidance and support from experienced project managers at Rapolitics and the six lighthouse organizations.

In 2021, the youth team unveiled their first concept, Jungle Desk—an online and physical showcase format featuring live-streamed concerts and artist talks. Jungle Desk debuted at Demokratigaragen during Folkemødet in 2021.

[.lightbox]One of our key objectives with Hip Hop Hub, in collaboration with our six lighthouse organizations, is to expand educational offerings for young people across the country. In the spring of 2021, we introduced six new educational packages developed by each of them. These six workshops cover everything from street art and urban renewal to rap and music production.[.lightbox]

RESEARCH

It is crucial for us that the insights gained throughout the project reach a broader, nationwide audience. That’s why, in 2020, we invited a group of university-affiliated researchers and practitioners to participate in two seminars. These seminars provided an opportunity to discuss, refine, and examine our methodologies and experiences.

Additionally, groups of master’s students were encouraged to follow our project and contribute new perspectives on our methods and our work in strengthening Danish youth culture. Their research was monitored by our academic network, and the results were incorporated into the project evaluation, which was presented in collaboration with Deltager Danmark at the end of the initiative.
