Right to Rap: Syria

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Background

Rapolitics has teamed up with Danish Center for Culture and Development and Images Youth for a number of years. In 2014, we welcomed raptivists from South-Sudan to Denmark and in 2015, we touched upon the issues of censorship and freedom of expression with the help of Syrian raptivists Refugees of Rap. In 2016 we once again welcomed the rap group for another project in Denmark.

Right to Rap I

Refugees of Rap visited Denmark in order to co-facilitate a series of rap-workshops in schools and institutions all around the country together with Danish Rapolitics-coaches. The purpose of the project was to address issues of censorship and freedom of expression through rap music with an emphasis on the situation for Syrian artists and musicians. The workshops was conducted in September/October 2015, but the preparation was undergoing with a visit from Refugees of Rap back in January.

Right to Rap II: Syria

Refugees of Rap returned to Denmark in the fall of 2016 to once again co-facilitate a series of rap-workshops in schools and institutions all around the country with coaches from Rapolitics. The workshops were conducted in September/October of 2016. In 2018 Refugees of Rap once again returned to Denmark, this time to go oin tour around the country with our partner and independent record label, Affiliated.
